Dealer's Remarks:It's too bad GM killed off Oldsmobile. But by the 1980s, GM's "ladder of success" paradigm -- Chevrolet, Pontiac, Oldsmobile, Buick and Cadillac -- had been squeezed at both ends by increased competition from both Japan and Europe. But up through the 1970s, each marque still had its own identity and drivetrain components, even if they were on shared platforms.
Built on the same A-body platform as the Chevrolet Chevelle and the Pontiac LeMans/GTO, the Oldsmobile Cutlass was a higher-priced and generally more highly-optioned alternative for the discerning buyer.
This example, a 1971 Cutlass Supreme Convertible, shipped with a V8, automatic transmission, power steering, power brakes, a power top and factory air conditioning -- just about every creature comfort you could get on an Olds in 1971. It's clad in an awesome 1970s color, Bittersweet -- identical to Chevrolet's Burnt Orange. A white convertible top and color-matched rally wheels complete the retro look. This Cutlass is not a perfect show car, but it is a solid, turn-key driver. The paint and trim are in decent driver condition; glass is good and the bumpers are particularly nice. The power top works properly and shows well, although there is one small tear on the passenger side.
The interior, finished in burgundy and brown, is in good condition. Door panels, dash and seats all show well with little wear. A modern two-post stereo maintains a factory appearance while adding the versatility of an auxiliary input. This car originally came with a column shifter, but we like that it's been upgraded to a center console with floor shifter. Aside from that one minor edit, this Cutlass retains a very correct, stock appearance.
Under the hood is an Oldsmobile Rocket 350 mated to a Turbo 350 automatic transmission. The engine runs well and the gearbox shifts just as it should; power steering, power brakes, a/c and power top all function normally (the a/c was recently serviced and is blowing cold).
